Artist Biography

Adam Riches is a figurative expressionist who works in oil paint and pen.

A Fine Arts graduate of the University of Suffolk, he came to his own practice influenced by the photorealist technique of Gerhard Richter and the modern history painting of contemporary portraitist Yan Pei Ming.

Switching between the spontaneous freedom of drawing, and the control and order of oil painting, Adam works out from the figure to create meditations on what it’s like to be human. His work explores the private chaos and conflict that often lies beneath.

His work is challenging, and not always comfortable. His figures are often completely still, yet at the same time, altered and blurred by the forcefields of their inner thoughts. His images urge us to confront the nature of human relationships, and how they move between light and dark, both nurturing and destroying us.

Like Francis Bacon, Adam uses the practice of adding and erasing paint in his work, to allow the unconscious to emerge on the canvas. His love affair with the act of painting, building texture to add dimension and depth, is also reminiscent of the paintings of Lucian Freud.

Adam produces original paintings and drawings, and limited editions. He also accepts commissions.
