Jelly Green is a portrait and landscape artist, who trained at the Royal Drawing School and has been mentored by Maggi Hambling since the age of 16.
Her latest body of work has developed out of the highly detailed blue and green ‘forest canopy’ paintings which garnered her significant success early in her career.
In this latest series, Jelly investigates climate emergency through a series of dynamic, abstract ‘fire’ paintings.
The series examines her own emotional response to witnessing first-hand in Borneo the perilous impact of deforestation on wildlife, while forest fires raged in other parts of the globe.
The works employ a different process to Jelly’s forest paintings. While those are created in the studio from observational watercolour studies made outside, the 'fire' series is more expressive and abstract, painted solely in the studio from ‘feeling and imagination’.
The palette is different, too. Licks of orange flame loom behind the green and blue forest, and are eventually overtaken by a ferocious red palette. Only a few recognisable botanical details remain, now being swallowed by an inferno.
Through a freer, more textured mark-making, Jelly urges us to share the ‘urgency and panic’ she feels, and the ‘heat from the fire’. In doing so, she invites us to examine our own complicity as humans in the destruction of our planet, and, ultimately, calls us to action.
